Garden of the Senses
Garden of the Senses

COST: $1.8 million

OPENED: Spring 1998

The Garden of the Senses is a sensory garden for everyone! The garden is filled with over 250 different species of herbs, perennials and trees, along with blankets of roses and flowers. Several bronze animal sculptures, an enormous sundial, butterfly friendly plants, trellises, pools of water and brightly colored birds from South American parrots to Australian cockatoos also adorn the area (animals are off display during the winter). These elements of flora, fauna and art combine to make this a very peaceful and relaxing place to visit.

Horticulture Therapy

Since 1998, the summer months provides a place for a Horticulture Therapy Program that uses gardening and plant-related activities as treatment for those with mental or physical disabilities. Different special needs groups with clients from the Omaha area have participated in the program with activities that can improve hand-eye coordination, improved listening and communication skills, reduced stress, and for many, an increase in self-esteem. For some, the garden has provided a unique setting where basic employability skills are taught, such as staying on task, following directions and cooperating with others as they learn about horticulture.

A Sensory Experience

The Garden of the Senses was built based on the concept of having an area where people with limitations can interact and appreciate the Zoo through sensory experiences. The garden is designed so all five senses can be ignited. The beautiful aromatic perfumes of flowers and herbs scattered throughout the garden allows for the sense of smell to be experienced. The different textures of various plants, Braille identification signs, bronze animal statues and the raised flower beds for easy access for planting allows visitors to experience the world through the sense of touch. Visitors can sit back and hear the chirping of birds, listen to the fountains and splash in the water.

Sculptures

The beautiful artwork of Tom Tischler, J.D. Hultine, and Tom Palmerton are scattered throughout the garden. The Garden of the Senses is truly an oasis of beauty found in the middle of Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo.
